IMAC makes a further £5m investment in Digital Rights Group.
Ingenious Media Active Capital Limited ('IMAC') announces that it has completed a further investment of £5.27 million in Digital Rights Group Limited ('DRG' or the 'Group'). This follows IMAC's investment of £6 million in DRG - £3 million in December 2006 and £3 million in June 2007.
DRG provides TV producers with international distribution for their rights and programmes independent of the major broadcasters or other TV producer-owned distributors.
The investment will be used to fund the acquisition of Channel 4 International (C4i), the international TV distribution business of Channel 4, which was completed simultaneously with this investment, and to provide additional working capital to DRG. C4i has been wholly acquired by DRG adding a multi-genre library
of new and classic programming with a particular focus on high quality factual programming such as the feature length documentaries The Beckoning Silence and In the Shadow of the Moon, and dramas Shackleton and Shameless.
Following the acquisition, DRG will manage the international sales of Channel 4's catalogue of over 3000 programmes and C4i's dedicated sales and acquisition team will join DRG. The business will continue to operate under the C4i brand.
The acquisition of C4i means that DRG has achieved its aim of building the UK's largest independent TV rights distribution group in less than a year.
To date DRG has acquired:
•Portman Film and TV Ltd - distributors of hit dramas, such as Kingdom and
Doc Martin
•iD Distribution - a leading distributor of factual entertainment;
•Zeal Entertainment - a specialist in format sales which represents some
of the UK's leading producers; and the US hit programme Singing Bee
•Click TV - distributors of formats including This Is Your Life.
•i-Rights - which specialises in content for digital media.
Patrick Bradley, Director of Ingenious Ventures, Manager of IMAC, said: "I am delighted with the progress DRG has made since IMAC's initial investment in December last year."
"Channel 4 has created a valuable asset in C4i, the acquisition of which will further strengthen DRG as it consolidates its position as the UK's leading independent TV distribution company."
Michael Hodgson, Managing Director, Channel 4 Rights, said: "We've taken great care in ensuring an independent entity took over the company which shared our vision and would secure a continued presence and identity for C4i including all staff and clients. DRG is exactly that and we are confident that they can take C4i from strength to strength."
Chris Wright, Chairman of DRG, said: "A year ago, with IMAC's backing, we founded DRG with the goal of building a new leader in independent TV distribution. In that short time we have built the largest independent television distribution company in the UK."
"The C4i deal is the next chapter in the DRG story strengthening our international presence and underlining our intention to be a major force in TV worldwide. I am delighted that with the acquisition of C4i we have six strong businesses, each with a focus on a particular genre of programming. DRG provides a compelling combination of independence and capital for content owners and a one stop shop for multi-genre programming for buyers and publishers."
